Hydranautics Reverse Osmosis Membrane Model Catalogue and Selection

The Hydranautics (US) product line is organised along three axes: energy consumption, salt rejection and fouling resistance. The model count is large, but the structure is clear. This site covers 135 elements across the ESPA, CPA, SWC, ESNA, LFC and sanitary series.

135 elements · Data source: manufacturers' technical manuals, brochures and test data from official design software

Hydranautics is one of the earlier manufacturers to industrialise thin-film composite polyamide membranes and is now part of Nitto Denko. Its elements are installed in large numbers in power, petrochemical and municipal systems. A distinguishing feature is fine model segmentation within a series: the same 8040 format is split into several models by membrane area (365/400/440 ft²) and feed spacer (standard/LD low pressure drop), so the array can be tuned in detail.

For designers, one practical aspect of the Hydranautics naming system is that the three main series, ESPA, CPA and SWC, correspond to ultra-low pressure, high-rejection brackish water and seawater respectively. Element selection therefore starts with the series, then narrows by area and pressure drop, which is far faster than comparing parameters model by model across dozens of models.

Coverage:135 elements of this brand, of which 93 are in 8040 format, 27 are seawater elements and 10 are nanofiltration elements (including large formats such as 16-inch). Parameters are normalised to a common basis, for comparison under identical conditions and for checking alternative models.

Distribution of test pressure and stabilised salt rejection for Hydranautics elements
Distribution of the 120 RO elements of this brand in the library: test pressure 75~800 psi, stabilised salt rejection 98.5%~99.84%. Low-pressure brackish water elements lie on the left, high-pressure seawater elements on the right, and rejection increases upwards. In element selection, first locate the region that applies, then compare area and pressure drop among models in that region.

Representative models and parameters

The table below lists representative models in 8040 format (365–510 ft² per element) from the library, sorted by area from largest to smallest; this format contains 93 elements in total. The full model list can be filtered by brand in the design tool.

FAQ

Which country does Hydranautics come from?

Hydranautics is a US brand headquartered in California and now part of Nitto Denko of Japan.

What is the difference between ESPA and CPA?

ESPA is the ultra-low pressure series: it requires lower pressure for the same permeate flow and suits low-salinity water. CPA is the high-rejection brackish water series, with higher rejection and greater salinity tolerance. Above about 2000 mg/L, CPA is usually preferred.

What design software does Hydranautics provide?

IMSDesign, in both desktop and cloud (IMSDesign Cloud) versions, covering RO, NF and UF. Design files are .desx, or .des in older versions.

Can Hydranautics and DuPont elements be interchanged directly?

Elements of the same 8040 size fit the same pressure vessel, but membrane area (365–440 ft²), pressure drop characteristics and temperature correction differ. Direct substitution changes the permeate and concentrate distribution of each element, so the array must be rechecked.
